1. I thought the reading was interesting. I enjoyed seeing references to Hitchhikers guide since I read the book last year in class. I really enjoyed the book too. The paper was also much easier to read compared to the Brandt essay.
2. I think the main point Pasqualin was trying to make was that no matter who you are or what you’ve been through your experiences make you who you are today. Whether you learn from your experiences or take notes from them. I believe pasqualin has mostly moved passed his experiences, like how he struggled with school and family matters but he didn’t let those experiences hold him back.
3. This reading has helped me better understand and reflect in my own literacy beginnings. It will help me reflect on how my sponsors have effected me.

• Luca Pasqualin and the sorcerers stone – How he failed in school and his books were taken away
• the hitchhikers guide to the galaxy- talked about how his parents were going through a divorce, family going bankrupt, brother being deported, and other personal problems. He said he relates himself in that book. Takes values from that book such as “Don’t Panic”
• Busboy – His family struggled with finances so he got a job as a busboy. He found other literacy besides reading/ writing in his job. He found signals on how people communicate.
• Pet detective – He learned the literacy of being a salesman. He found that people communicate that they want a product by how they touch and hold the item, so he took that to his advantage.
• The debate team and the art of war – He talked about “kill words” and how you can’t say certain things during a debate, such as “always.” He also talked about how people would bait opponents into saying those “kill words.”
• Dont panic – He tells us when he went back to his old room and he realizes how many books he has read. He asks if his grades would be the same without all his sponsors. The best thing he has learned is don’t panic

A time that I have encountered and alien literacy was the first day of Computer Programming class in high school. I had no idea what I was doing the whole time and I needed constant help from my peers. The computer language was just so new and different. I kinda panicked after that first day but I eventually started to get the hang of it even though I’m nowhere close to perfect.

When asked whether I agree or not with Brandts claim that race and class impacts your literacy sponsor, I would agree. Being in a family that gifted you a computer and that is financially gives you a huge jump ahead, rather than having to work for it all.

Im more of a Branch. I live in a stable house hold with two parents with well paying jobs, My parents have payed for my computer among other things. My main literacy sponsors are probably both my parents, Harrison High school, Apple devices, and Video games. Harrison High school is probably my biggest literacy sponsor since they showed me the argumentative, academic, and creative writing.

consider the things that Brandt had to day about sponsors of literacy. Were these ideas new to you? What spoke to you about what she was saying? What was compelling and what was jarring and challenging? What are you thinking about the sponsors of your own?

Well the ideas Brandt wrote about was new to me. I never thought of literacy outside of reading and writing.

Some of the earliest times I remember reading was when I was being put to bed and my mother read books to me and I would ask to see. I also remember trying to read directions for a video game I didn’t know how to read. Often at time I would look at the pictures and figure out what to do from those images. In a way that is literacy too. While reading I realizing that literacy isn’t just books and papers, but can also be computers and code or road signs. Literacy is everywhere you just have to learn how to decipher it.

As a kid I would draw all the time. I would draw video game characters and animals most often. Im still drawing and in fact my major has me drawing everyday. So I would say my childhood has definitely shaped my literacy and my interest today.

In my assignment draft I wrote about what I think writing is. I haven’t finished yet and I realized I got off topic. Im going to ask my family and a couple of friends what they think writing is and compare their thoughts to my thoughts. Im not that sure what else I could write about however.

1. What is writing? Taking down thoughts about a topic
2. What is Reading? Processing information a given topic.
3. What is research? In depth study on a specific subject matter. Gathering new information to support an idea or opinion.
4. What do good writers do? They check the facts, grammatically correct, staying in the bounds of the subject they are writing. They accept feed back and constructive criticism.
5. What is good writing? Clear and concise, making the reader think and reflect on the topic.

Just being in this new school is a stress pint for me. I have lived my life in the same house and going to the same school. How these block schedules are structured is completely new to me. However, I am enjoying these classes. Going to school and making art rather than sitting down and hearing lectures all day is amazing. I hated waking up for high school but I don’t dread it as much anymore for college.
